The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Number One Intense opens with a generous bouquet of white flowers resting on a creamy base of sandalwood and animalic nuances. The florals arrive without apology, without hedging, without any attempt to soften what they are. This is a fragrance that announces itself and refuses to whisper. The white flowers dominate from the first spray, a full and opulent heart that refuses to hide behind subtlety. Sandalwood anchors the composition with its creamy warmth, while animalic notes add depth and presence that keep the florals from floating away into the air. The overall effect is one of boldness, of a fragrance that knows exactly what it wants to be and commits to that vision completely.
The structure here is what makes it interesting. Galbanum opens the composition, that sharp, green, slightly bitter note that makes the white florals feel luminous rather than sweet. The heart is technically several different materials: tuberose absolute, jasmine absolute, ylang-ylang, rose absolute, orange blossom, and orris root. Together they create an overwhelming bloom that fills the space around you. The white florals accumulate rather than layer, each note adding to the richness until the heart becomes a single, coherent statement of floral opulence.
The evolution
The opening hits bright. Galbanum arrives first, green and sharp, a brief tension before the white florals take over. Thirty minutes in, the heart is fully established. Tuberose leads, but jasmine, ylang-ylang, and rose absolute pile in so densely that the individual notes become almost indistinguishable. One massive, creamy bloom. Orange blossom adds a slight bitterness to keep it from becoming cloying. The drydown arrives slowly. Sandalwood and animalic notes emerge first, the creaminess settling in while the florals begin to thin. Oakmoss gives the base structure, that classic chypre anchor that makes the whole composition feel deliberate rather than accidental. The animalic notes in the base are the tell: they keep the florals present even as the composition warms against skin. The drydown lasts intimate and close, powdery, warm, animalic.
Cultural impact
Number One Intense arrived as a debut creation from Nicolai, bringing with it a commitment to classical perfumery traditions. The heavy white florals and animalic notes draw from chypre foundations, creating a dense floral construction that prioritizes richness and depth. The composition uses galbanum to open with a sharp, green brightness that makes the white florals feel luminous rather than sweet. At the heart, tuberose absolute, jasmine absolute, ylang-ylang, rose absolute, orange blossom, and orris root combine into a full, opulent bloom.
