The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Thomas Fontaine designed Black Jade in 2011 for Lubin's Les Classiques collection. Fontaine built the composition around a tension between cool green opening notes and a warm, resinous base. The green notes arrive first, sharp and aromatic, before transitioning into richer, deeper territory. The warm resinous base anchors the fragrance, providing a substantial foundation that lingers. This combination of cool and warm creates an interesting interplay, the freshness of the opening gradually yielding to the more substantial base. Black Jade presents itself as a layered experience, one that reveals different facets over time rather than presenting a single, static impression.
The structure here is worth dwelling on. Galbanum opens the composition with a sharp, green bite. Bergamot softens the edges. Cardamom adds spice without heat. Then the heart arrives: damask rose and jasmine against incense and cinnamon. The floral notes sit alongside smoke and warmth, creating a complex middle section. The base layers patchouli and sandalwood against vanilla, tonka bean, and amber. The overall movement is toward warmth, toward something that settles and stays on the skin.
The evolution
Cardamom hits first, green, bright, slightly sharp. Bergamot follows, softening what came before. Galbanum adds a herbal edge that lifts everything. The handoff to the heart brings rose and jasmine arriving together, but incense and cinnamon are already threading through. Jasmine gives body; incense gives smoke; cinnamon adds warmth. The florals here are supported by smoke and warmth from the surrounding notes. By the time the base arrives, patchouli and sandalwood ground everything. Vanilla and tonka bean soften the edges. Amber adds warmth. The drydown on Black Jade is intimate and close to the skin. The vanilla and patchouli provide a solid foundation, helping the fragrance remain present. When the main character does fade, it leaves behind a faint trace of amber and tonka, a soft reminder that lingers afterward.
Cultural impact
Black Jade sits comfortably in Lubin's classical collection. The spicy-amber structure, the confident rose, the incense threading through the heart, creates a composition with presence. Lubin's approach with this fragrance reflects the house's ability to work with contrasting elements, bringing together bright and deep notes within a single composition.
