The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Akkad takes its name from the first empire to unify Mesopotamia. In the Les Talismania collection, Lubin translates ancient fascinations into wearable form, and Akkad stands as a distinctive expression of that project's intent. Perfumer Delphine Thierry built the fragrance around a single tension: brightness versus depth. Citrus and herb open the composition, resins and smoke define the heart, amber and vanilla anchor the base. Three movements form a coherent narrative, not a reconstruction of ancient perfumery but a reimagining of what ancient ambition might have suggested in scent.
The use of clary sage alongside citrus is unusual. Akkad begins with an herbal bitterness that acts as a counterpoint to everything that follows: the resins land harder, the amber reads warmer, the vanilla feels earned rather than easy. Elemi resin is the quiet workhorse here, less common than frankincense, adding a citrusy-resinous lift that shapes the heart's character. Combined with styrax, which brings a smoky, almost leathery depth, the heart of Akkad becomes the fulcrum of the entire composition, the point where herbal freshness hands off to resinous warmth.
The evolution
The opening is quick and declarative. Clary sage, bergamot, and mandarin orange arrive together, the sage providing an herbal counterpoint to the citrus brightness. It's an opening that announces itself without apology. The heart phase follows as the initial citrus recedes. Frankincense rises first, smoky and contemplative, followed by cardamom's warmth and elemi's citrus-resinous lift. The styrax adds a dark, almost balsamic undertone that keeps the heart grounded. As the fragrance develops, the brightness fades and is replaced by a warm, resinous depth that feels like the core of the scent rather than an accent. The drydown is where Akkad becomes distinctive. Labdanum and patchouli create a dark, slightly earthy base, while vanilla softens the edges and brings the amber forward. The result lingers long, its longevity above average, developing in layers that reward patience.
Cultural impact
Akkad represents Lubin's expression of the Les Talismania concept, translating ancient civilizations into contemporary compositions. The fragrance presents a resinous oriental character with an herbal edge that distinguishes it from more straightforwardly sweet or linear oriental scents. The clary sage opening can be polarizing for some, while others find it an intriguing entry point to a more complex aromatic experience. Akkad makes a specific choice about its orientation, committing to its vision without adjusting for broader accessibility.
