The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Thomas Fontaine revisited Sortilège in 2014, returning to a fragrance that once defined the Stork Club era. The aldehydic structure anchors the composition, a quality that gives the scent its characteristic lift and luminosity. This aldehydic quality allows the fragrance to feel immediate and expansive, opening with a bright, shimmering quality that holds the florals in suspension rather than letting them bloom unchecked. The effect is a fragrance that feels both immediate and enduring, present without overwhelming.
The aldehydes create a shimmering opening that suspends the yellow florals, allowing lilac and ylang-ylang to unfold with precision. Iris and Turkish rose emerge, adding a waxy, slightly dry floral character that brings weight to the composition. The base settles into Indonesian sandalwood and vetiver, materials that stretch the drydown across hours rather than minutes. These base materials provide a dry, slightly earthy foundation that balances the powdery florals above, creating a composition that moves from luminous opening to intimate heart to grounded finish.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright and lifted, aldehydes creating immediate elegance before the lilac and ylang-ylang arrive in cool, slightly soapy procession. This is the powdery phase, lasting as the yellow florals reach their peak and begin to soften. The transition to heart happens gradually, iris and Turkish rose emerging from the florals like a figure stepping forward from a crowd. The composition becomes more intimate here, more personal. Sandalwood and amber take over, warming the drydown into something skin-close. Musk holds everything near. A trace of vetiver and labdanum remains, resinous, slightly animalic, evidence of something worn and loved.
Cultural impact
Sortilège occupies a particular space among aldehydic florals, comparable in structure to classics like Rive Gauche and Miss Dior Esprit de Parfum Original. Thomas Fontaine's 2014 reissue brings this composition to a new audience, maintaining the aldehydic framework that defines the genre. The fragrance speaks to collectors who appreciate the particular qualities of this style: the lifted opening, the powdery heart, the grounded base. It is a confident statement in a register that rewards attention.
