Why it exists.
The beginning
Lancôme, founded in 1935, built its identity on Parisian elegance and accessible luxury throughout the mid-twentieth century. By 1978, the chypre genre had reached its cultural zenith, and the house sought to claim territory within that storied olfactive family. Gerard Goupy, the perfumer behind this creation, delivered Magie Noire, literally Black Magic, as a response to the era's obsession with mossy, complex compositions. The parfum concentration, released that year, represented the fullest expression of Goupy's vision, allowing the green-fruity-chypre architecture to unfold with maximum presence and longevity.
Goupy's note philosophy for Magie Noire embraced contrast: green against fruity, sweet against bitter, animalic against floral. The galbanum-blackcurrant opening creates immediate tension, resolved by the honeyed warmth of the heart and anchored by the mossy-resinous base. Bergamot and Cinnamon temper the green assault with citrus brightness and warm spice, while Rose and Hyacinth whisper beneath. Within minutes, Honey emerges as the heart's dominant note, its sweet-animalic character weaving through Narcissus and Orris Root's powdery iris facets. Tuberose and Ylang-Ylang contribute creamy, slightly indolic warmth, Jasmine adds rich floral depth, and Lily of the Valley provides clean, bell-like freshness. Cedarwood grounds the transition.
