The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Molinard's Habanita began in 1921. The 2012 Eau de Parfum is a modern reinterpretation of that original, same 600 ingredients, different proportions, bolder concentration. The house didn't rebuild Habanita from scratch. It looked at what made the original last nearly a century and asked: what if we leaned harder into that?
The official description from Molinard reads like a series of contradictions: a lemon disguised as licorice, a rose whose petals seem cut from sheepskin, a vanilla that can come out of a cigar cellar, an amber worthy of an architect's drawing board. These aren't accidental metaphors. They describe the actual tension in the composition, each note behaving against type. The structure doesn't hide its ingredients. It reorders them so familiar materials arrive in unfamiliar formations.
The evolution
The opening performs its own contradiction. Mastic resin and petitgrain citrus arrive simultaneously, a green-bitter jolt paired with a bright, almost astringent green. The citrus note reads licorice-adjacent, as if performing rather than simply presenting itself. There's a sharpened quality to the pairing that feels deliberate rather than softened. As the opening settles, the rose arrives with a honeyed warmth that carries something wilder underneath. The petals feel almost woolly against the powdery atmosphere building from heliotrope and mimosa. These florals create a soft, almond-tinted layer that adds complexity without becoming precious. By the drydown, the cedar and vetiver have settled into a warm woody base, and the vanilla emerges creamy and close. Sandalwood follows, adding depth and a smooth, buttery richness.
Cultural impact
Habanita occupies a specific niche in the fragrance landscape, with genuine structure and a resinous opening that refuses to be polite. Released in 2012, it presents an intriguing option for those who appreciate oriental fragrances with bold character. The composition balances warmth with complexity, offering something that feels both timeless and distinctive in its execution.
