The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Habanita began in the 1920s, one of those rare compositions that felt inevitable the moment it arrived. The brief was simple: create a fragrance that could hold powder and vanilla in the same breath without one drowning out the other. For Molinard, that meant building around heliotrope and mimosa, then finding the right support structure to keep those florals from drifting into sweetness. The balance they achieved became the signature. Decades passed. Then, in 2019, the house returned to that original blueprint and asked: what would it look like rebuilt for the present? The Exclusive Edition is the answer, same soul, different era.
The note structure tells you everything about the ambition here. Heliotrope and mimosa don't typically anchor a fragrance this serious; they lean decorative, powder-puff. But Molinard grounded them with mastic, a resinous, herbal material, and let it reshape the florals into something with more edge than their usual placement would suggest. The result is a powder note that doesn't announce itself. It arrives quietly, then settles. That's the distinction: this isn't powder as concept. It's powder as consequence.
The evolution
The opening is resin-first. Mastic and petitgrain arrive together, green, slightly medicinal, a little sharp. Ylang-ylang shows up behind them, creamy but not sweet, and the geranium keeps things lively for the first twenty minutes. Then the florals take over: heliotrope and mimosa soften everything into that characteristic powdery haze. May rose adds a quiet floral warmth without pushing into sweetness. By hour three, cedar and vetiver have arrived. The composition shifts from floral to woody, and the vanilla underneath begins to assert itself, not as a declaration, but as a foundation. The sandalwood and patchouli hold the drydown for hours. Oakmoss is the quiet anchor, giving the whole thing a slightly mossy, vintage register that justifies the name.
Cultural impact
Habanita has existed in one form or another since the 1920s. The Exclusive Edition arrived in 2019 as a new chapter in the fragrance's history. Wearers who know the vintage version recognize the register immediately. Those encountering it fresh discover something with an unmistakable character, a powder-forward composition that holds its own against fragrances at any level.
