The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Amazone concept draws from the legendary female warriors of Greek mythology, powerful, independent, self-governing. This was a different kind of femininity than what typically appeared in perfumery at the time. Rather than romanticizing or softening the warrior archetype, Maurice Maurin grounded it in something natural and verdant. The Amazone was composed in 1974, built around blackcurrant bud and green accords as a structural foundation rather than a decorative element. It exists on its own terms, confident, understated, within the Hermès tradition of thoughtful composition.
The blackcurrant bud is the tell. It's green, slightly tart, unusual in fine fragrance, more often found in hair products. The galbanum, hyacinth, and blackcurrant create a sensation closer to crushed stems than to traditional florals. This is a green character that doesn't soften. The jasmine and rose sit beneath the green, supporting rather than overwhelming. The iris adds a powdery, slightly metallic edge that elevates without sweetening. A chypre that refuses to choose between garden and forest, between mythic and grounded.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright and crisp, bergamot, geranium, cassia, hyacinth. That initial burst feels like morning air cutting through a garden. Within twenty minutes, the green deepens, the florals become more pronounced, moving toward jasmine, lily of the valley, rose, and iris. The drydown carries the longest, anchored by oakmoss, vetiver, amber, and cedarwood. Around the two-hour mark, there's a particular moment when the green accord softens but remains present, blending with iris and amber before transitioning into a woody, mossy finish that stays close to the skin. The sillage remains intimate throughout, creating the sense of something that's been with you all day rather than announcing itself to the room.
Cultural impact
Amazone by Hermès sparked conversation about what modern femininity could smell like when it launched in 1974. It arrived at a time when women's lib was reshaping culture, and this fragrance became a scent shorthand for confident, earned sophistication. It remains a reference point for those seeking green chypre power that feels authentic rather than inherited.
