The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Carthusia draws from Mediterranean botanical traditions, a house philosophy that emphasizes place, memory, and natural ingredients. For Essence of the Park, the brand partnered with perfumer Luca Maffei to explore green spaces within urban environments, shifting from the pastoral landscapes of other releases to something more metropolitan and layered. The emphasis on citrus and aquatic notes in the opening reflects that urban clarity, the way city air can feel sharp and bright after rain or early morning. Maffei structured the composition to move from that initial citrussy brightness through a green floral heart that evokes planted parkland, and into a base that feels grounded and lived-in rather than abstractly beautiful.
The note selection for Essence of the Park reflects a deliberate attempt to translate urban green spaces into olfactory form. Lemon and bergamot open with the kind of clarity associated with morning light on stone, while aquatic notes capture the moisture that collects in planted areas. The green heart of geranium, lily of the valley, and magnolia draws from the botanical character of park foliage, that particular freshness that exists only in places where nature has been arranged alongside human activity.
The evolution
Essence of the Park begins with a sharp, clean citrus burst that feels immediate and refreshing. Lemon and bergamot dominate, quickly joined by mandarin orange and the cool transparency of aquatic notes. Artemisia keeps the opening from becoming purely sweet, adding a dry herbaceous quality that feels intentional rather than accidental. The heart arrives as a green floral phase where geranium and lily of the valley project most clearly, with magnolia softening the sharper edges and pink pepper introducing a faint spice. Clove builds slowly into the heart, giving the floral stage unexpected warmth. The drydown shifts toward softness: white musk and ambergris create a clean, faintly animalic base, while elemi resin adds a warm, resinous quality. Tonka bean and vanilla provide a gentle sweetness, and vetiver keeps the base grounded with its earthy, rooty character, making the fragrance feel settled and natural as it lingers.
Cultural impact
For those who appreciate green and aquatic notes, Essence of the Park offers a fragrance that feels both contemporary and grounded. The marine-herbal opening combined with a magnolia heart creates a scent profile that balances freshness with floral depth. Its accessible character makes it suitable for daily wear, while its distinct personality sets it apart from more conventional offerings. The fragrance belongs to a tradition of Italian perfumery that values clarity, freshness, and a certain Mediterranean brightness over heavier, more dramatic compositions.
