The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2017 Carthusia collaborated with Luca Maffei to create a jasmine fragrance that belonged to Capri without becoming a postcard. Maffei understood the brief immediately, recognizing the opportunity to translate the island's character into scent. The name, Gelsomini di Capri, points directly to the flower and the place that inspired it. What Maffei built is a fragrance that holds both the brightness of the island's citrus and a warmth that settles in as the day progresses. The composition balances immediate clarity with something deeper that reveals itself over time, creating an olfactory portrait that feels both fresh and enduring.
The genius of the structure is how the heart and base negotiate rather than compete. Jasmine and ylang-ylang are tropical flowers by nature, they carry weight, sometimes excess, but Maffei paired them with a citrus opening that refuses to let the composition become languid. Bergamot, lemon, mandarin, ginger, pink pepper: these are not background actors. They are the opening statement, and they insist on keeping the jasmine honest. Then the base arrives: cashmeran and vanilla do what creamy bases do, they soften, they warm, they make the whole thing feel worn rather than applied. The fragrance does not sit on skin, it settles into it.
The evolution
The opening arrives citrus-forward and sharp, with bergamot and lemon taking the lead. Ginger adds a clean heat underneath that you feel more than smell. Pink pepper flickers at the edges. Soon the jasmine begins to expand, not dramatic but certain in its presence. Orange blossom joins it and suddenly the fragrance takes on a tropical quality without tipping into anything synthetic or heavy. A rose note appears briefly, almost as a bridge between the bright opening and what follows. The drydown is where Gelsomini di Capri reveals its staying power. Labdanum arrives quietly and anchors the composition with warmth. White musk keeps things close to the skin. Cashmeran smooths everything into something soft and enveloping. The base lingers for hours in a moderate sillage that announces nothing but refuses to leave, remaining present without ever becoming overwhelming.
Cultural impact
Gelsomini di Capri occupies a particular space in the Carthusia catalog, not the quietest the house makes, not the boldest, but perhaps the most wearable across a wide range of occasions and seasons. The jasmine-forward composition places it firmly in the Mediterranean floral tradition, and the creamy drydown makes it approachable for those who might otherwise find jasmine too indolic. It manages to feel both classic and contemporary, rooted in a specific place while remaining universally appealing. The fragrance has a quality of quiet confidence, offering something rich and layered without demanding attention.
