The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Gelsomini di Capri arrived in 2017 when Carthusia commissioned Luca Maffei to translate the island's jasmine tradition into something new. The fragrance opens with a citrus chord that brings bergamot, lemon, and tangerine together in immediate brightness. Beneath this, ginger and pink pepper add a clean, understated heat. As the top notes settle, the jasmine begins to emerge, its warm, honeyed character softened by the presence of orange blossom and ginestra. The ylang-ylang deepens the heart, adding a tropical richness that gives the floral middle layer unexpected depth. Carthusia released it as an eau de parfum. The composition evolves across hours, moving from its initial citrus brightness through the floral heart and into a base of vanilla, amber, and cashmere wood.
The jasmine absolute used here is Jasmine grandiflorum, a variety known for its warm, honeyed character rather than the indolic punch of some jasmine cultivars. Blended with Italian ginestra and orange blossom, it creates a heart that reads as singular despite using familiar materials. The cashmere wood in the base provides warmth and texture, giving the drydown a soft, fabric-like quality. Vanilla and amber add sweetness and depth, while labdanum offers resinous warmth that extends the wear.
The evolution
The opening arrives fast. Bergamot, lemon, and tangerine form a citrus chord that makes its presence known immediately. Ginger and pink pepper add clean heat underneath, a sense of spice without fire. The jasmine takes its time, not competing with the citrus brightness but arriving steadily as the top notes begin to settle. Orange blossom amplifies the floral sweetness, while ylang-ylang deepens the heart with tropical richness. Broom and rose provide structure, keeping the middle notes from becoming too soft. As the fragrance moves into its base, vanilla provides warmth, followed by amber and cashmere wood that give the drydown its distinctive texture. White musk keeps everything close and intimate, the kind of sillage that requires someone to lean in. Labdanum anchors the composition, its resinous warmth present long after the brighter top notes have faded.
Cultural impact
Gelsomini di Capri has found its audience among those who appreciate Carthusia's approach to Mediterranean jasmine. It occupies a place in the white floral category that appeals to both experienced fragrance wearers and those new to florals. The fragrance has remained in production since its 2017 launch, appreciated for its nuanced take on jasmine that moves beyond the expected. Wearers describe it as a scent that rewards attention, with layers that reveal themselves gradually rather than announcing themselves all at once. It has developed a following among those who seek something more considered than the typical jasmine fragrance.
