The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Encens Chypre is a fragrance built on the architecture of classical French chypre but infused with an oriental sensibility that pushes past convention. The peacock wasn't decorative. The structure genuinely unfolds like one: green-fruity at first, then revealing its full plumage as the heart blooms into carnation, damask rose, jasmine, and geranium. The name promised incense. The result delivered something more complex, a mirage of smoke and amber that earned its place as one of the house's defining works. The opening shimmers with bright, almost translucent fruitiness that barely hints at what follows. As the top notes recede, the heart unfurls with theatrical confidence, each floral note staking its claim before the resins and smoke arrive to anchor everything in place.
The top opens classically: bergamot, lime, artemisia, clary sage. Green-bitter, familiar from a hundred chypres. But the peach arrival surprises, and the elemi resin that threads through both top and heart adds a balsamic warmth that prevents the opening from feeling fleeting. The heart is dense, carnation absolute leading a floral parade that includes damask rose, rose geranium, ylang-ylang, and jasmine sambac. This is the peacock spreading its tail. Then the oriental base arrives: frankincense smoke, civet, castoreum, dark woods, benzoin, tolu. The structure inverts. The classical heart becomes a transition to something raw, warm, and uncompromising. A chypre that chose its own path.
The evolution
Encens Chypre opens with bergamot and lime cutting bright and clean. Artemisia and clary sage bring the green-bitter chypre signature. Jasmine sambac absolute adds its exotic sweetness while peach arrives unexpectedly, fleshy and sweet against the citrus. Elemi resin threads through, adding a balsamic resinous warmth. The heart deepens as peach and elemi persist, elemi strengthens rather than fades. Carnation absolute arrives with its clove-like spiciness, warming the floral heart. Damask rose absolute, rose geranium, and ylang-ylang absolute layer in, followed by jasmine sambac and orris root with its earthy-powdery depth. Tonka bean adds sweet warmth. The florals become dense, almost overwhelming, the peacock displaying its full plumage. The base is where the oriental vision fully arrives. Frankincense takes over with smoke that is near-tangible, dense and enveloping. Civet and castoreum emerge, the animalics asserting themselves with a raw, visceral presence that is not polite. These are structural elements, not footnotes.
Cultural impact
Encens Chypre has become one of the house's most talked-about releases, a full oriental chypre that layers fruit, floral, animalic, and resinous notes into something demanding and uncompromising. The fragrance presents an intense, richly layered composition that refuses to soften its edges. Fruit sweetness gives way to florals with real presence, and the animalic notes add a grounding quality that keeps the resins from becoming merely sweet. For collectors who want a chypre that refuses to apologize for what it is, Encens Chypre has become a touchstone.
