The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sultan Pasha doesn't hide what Tabac Grande is. He said it himself: one of his favorite childhood memories was a family friend who rode in on a huge horse, pipe in mouth, giving off the finest sweet tobacco he had ever smelled. Until he made Tabac Grande to replicate that very scent. It's a memory made material. No invention required, just the attempt to pin down something that lived in the air of a villa years ago, in the presence of a man on horseback. Sometimes memories are all we have. This one got preserved in oil.
What makes this work is the honesty of the materials. Hyraceum, derived from the secretions of the rock hyrax, is not a polite note. Neither is castoreum, the animalic secretion from beavers. Civet adds its unmistakable musk. Together they create something that feels raw and immediate. The tobacco supports everything, lending its leafy, organic warmth as a foundation for the composition. Cognac and coffee anchor the opening, their rich, spirit-forward notes creating an inviting warmth that draws you in.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately: sweet pipe tobacco, cognac warmth, saffron's amber glow. Coffee and hawthorn hover underneath, adding depth without competing. For the first hour, it reads as a warm, aromatic toddy, inviting and enveloping, with just enough sharpness to keep things interesting. The heart develops gradually as the initial brightness settles, with tobacco deepening in character while osmanthus and damask rose bloom quietly, their honeyed petals emerging from beneath the leafy warmth. Tonka bean adds a soft sweetness that rounds the edges, and heliotrope contributes its powdery, slightly almond-like softness that lingers in the background. The transition is organic rather than dramatic, the tobacco simply growing darker and more resinous as the florals become a supporting texture rather than a focal point.
Cultural impact
Since its debut, Tabac Grande has attracted a specific type of wearer: someone who wants tobacco done without compromise. The combination of genuine animalic notes like civet, hyraceum, and castoreum with natural tobacco and cognac creates something that speaks to a particular sensibility. It's a fragrance for those who appreciate authenticity in their scent wardrobe, embracing boldness and refusing to dilute its vision for broader appeal.
