The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Herod arrived in 2012 as the seventh fragrance from Parfums de Marly, composed by Olivier Pescheux. The house was building its reputation for bold, powerful scents rooted in 18th-century French elegance, and Herod was a statement. Tobacco leaf, incense, ciste, osmanthus. Not a safe combination. Something old. Something warm. Something that asked for attention rather than requesting it. The name carries weight. The fragrance earns it.
What makes Herod unusual is the osmanthus. That apricot-peach note appears in the heart alongside tobacco and incense, three materials that could easily crowd each other. Instead, the osmanthus sweetens the smoke, keeps the tobacco from getting too heavy, and gives the composition a fruited warmth that feels almost accidental. The ciste labdanum anchors everything with a resinous, slightly balsamic base that lets the vanilla settle in without rushing. It's a composition that trusts its materials to hold tension rather than resolve it immediately.
The evolution
The opening hits fast, cinnamon and pepperwood cutting through with heat that announces the wearer before the conversation starts. Twenty minutes in, the tobacco and incense take over, and the osmanthus adds that surprising fruited sweetness that keeps the smoke from feeling austere. By the third hour, the drydown arrives: vanilla and Iso E Super wrapped around cedar, musk, and vetiver. This is where Herod earns its reputation. The vanilla doesn't fade. It stays close, warm, intimate, detectable on skin and clothing well into the next day. On some skin, it lingers until morning.
Cultural impact
Herod opens with a generous splash of cured tobacco leaf, its rich, honeyed warmth instantly catching attention. The heart unfolds a velvety vanilla that smooths the tobacco’s edge, while a dash of cinnamon and a whisper of black pepper introduce a subtle, lingering spice. As the fragrance dries down, smoky incense and soft labdanum weave into the base, giving the scent a lasting, grounding depth that lingers on the skin for many hours. The overall impression is a warm, sweet‑spiced oriental composition that feels both bold and refined, commanding presence without ever overwhelming the space.
