The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Olivier Polge created The One for Men Eau de Parfum in 2015 as a richer interpretation of Dolce and Gabbana's signature masculine fragrance. The brief called for depth and complexity while maintaining the house's Mediterranean sensuality, resulting in a concentration that feels more intimate and enduring than its Eau de Toilette counterpart. Polge, known for his precision with florals, used the transition from bright citrus to velvety white blooms as a way to express duality. Peach and lychee were chosen to inject sweetness without cloying the bergamot top, and the vanilla-amber drydown was designed to mirror the warmth of skin in motion. The result is a fragrance that speaks of evening light and proximity, rooted in the Dolce and Gabbana tradition of confident sensuality.
Polge's note philosophy here centers on contrast and transition. The bright, fruity opening exists to surprise and engage, the floral heart to seduce quietly, and the warm drydown to imprint memory. Pairing plum with vetiver in the base creates a tension between sweetness and earthiness that echoes the juxtaposition of fruit and darkness in the overall composition. The fragrance is designed to be worn close to the skin, making the drydown phase the most personal and arguably the most successful part of the wear experience.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with a bright, almost effervescent burst of bergamot and mandarin orange, quickly joined by the soft sweetness of peach and the tropical nuance of lychee. This opening is sunny and immediate, projecting warmth without heaviness. Within fifteen to twenty minutes, the citrus begins to recede, and the floral heart takes over, led by lily and jasmine in a creamy, slightly sweet embrace. Lily of the valley adds a crispness that prevents the florals from becoming heavy. This heart phase is the longest, lasting several hours, and it is where the fragrance truly reveals its intimate character. As the florals fade, the drydown emerges, anchored by vanilla and amber in a warm, enveloping base. Musk softens the edges, plum adds a dark, fruity depth, and vetiver grounds everything with an earthy finish that lingers on skin long after the florals have dissipated. The arc is deliberate and satisfying, moving from brightness to softness to warmth.
Cultural impact
Since its 2015 debut, The One for Men Eau de Parfum has become a staple for those who crave a sophisticated twist on classic Italian masculinity. Wearers often cite its balance of bright citrus and warm amber as a modern reinterpretation of the house’s bold, sensual aesthetic, making it a go‑to for evenings where confidence needs a scented partner.
