The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Verônica Kato created [No] Gender in 2018 with a simple premise: gender is a suggestion. The Brazilian house has spent decades translating botanical heritage into modern scent, but this was something different. Not a masculine-feminine bridge. Not a compromise. A rejection of the question entirely. The name came first, everything else followed. The brief called for a fragrance with conviction, one that didn't dilute itself to fit.
The composition achieves this through contrast rather than neutrality. Bright citrus and green notes open with immediate clarity, the kind that feels like fresh air in a São Paulo morning. The heart adds complexity: lavender's cool stillness, jasmine's quiet floral weight, ginger and cardamom bringing a warmth that prevents any sharpness from winning. Cedar and sandalwood anchor the base, while tonka bean adds the soft finish that makes people lean in rather than pull back.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately. Pomelo, grapefruit, lemon, bergamot, the citrus basket arrives all at once, sharpened by green notes and a faint nutmeg undertone. Mandarin orange adds sweetness without losing the edge. This phase lasts roughly 30 minutes before the hand-off begins. The citrus recedes as lavender and jasmine take the stage, supported by ginger and cardamom. The florals aren't delicate here, jasmine brings body, not sweetness. The warmth builds quietly. By the second hour, cedar and sandalwood establish themselves. Patchouli grounds the drydown with earthiness, while tonka bean softens everything into a warm, close finish. The final phase lingers near the skin, intimate, woody, slightly sweet. Worn on fabric, the cedar persists into the next day.
Cultural impact
The 2018 launch of [No] Gender arrived during a period when gender-neutral fragrances were becoming more common, but many defaulted to heavy woods or washed-out florals to avoid the question. Natura took a different angle: bright citrus and green freshness as a statement. The name alone invites conversation. The fragrance itself delivers on the premise, it smells like someone who decided for themselves.
