The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The cumaru tree grows tall in the Amazon rainforest. Its seeds, dark and elongated, carry a scent the locals call tonka, warm, almost edible, like the forest itself distilled into something you can hold. The idea that a single ingredient, properly understood, could anchor an entire composition, led to Frescor de Cumaru. What emerged is a fragrance that opens with crystalline clarity and settles into something with real staying power. The natural warmth of the tonka note provides a foundation that feels both inviting and sophisticated, while the delicate floral and citrus elements keep the composition from becoming heavy. This is a scent built around restraint and intention, where each element serves the whole.
The structure is built on contrast. Bright citrus oils, bergamot, lemon, provide immediate clarity at the top, a familiar opening that puts people at ease. Below that, the cumaru note does its quiet work: warm, subtly sweet, adding depth that feels organic rather than constructed. The heart of jasmine, rose, and lily of the valley softens the transition from top to base, preventing any harsh hand-off. What makes this composition work is the way the warmer notes don't fight the freshness, they wait beneath it, arriving gradually as the citrus recedes.
The evolution
Bergamot and lemon announce themselves cleanly, a bright and confident opening that feels natural rather than aggressive. No harsh edges here. As the initial clarity settles, the cumaru begins to assert itself, not dramatically, but with the patience of something that knows it has time. The jasmine and rose emerge through the middle, lending a floral sweetness that bridges the gap between the fresh top and the warm base. The sandalwood and cedar take over, providing a woody foundation. The tonka bean adds its characteristic warmth, a soft vanilla-adjacent sweetness that rounds out what could have been a purely woody drydown. The result is a scent that stays close to the skin but lingers, present without announcing itself.
Cultural impact
Frescor de Cumaru arrived in 2016 as part of the Ekos line, continuing its tradition of Brazilian botanicals. The cumaru note introduces a warm, slightly exotic dimension to a composition built on citrus and florals, blending native ingredients with familiar elements to create something both grounded and adventurous.
