The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Essencial Oud Masculino arrived in 2017 from Natura's Brazilian studios, the work of perfumers Verônica Kato and Pierre-Constantin Guéros. The fragrance presents oud in a modern context, with a composition built around natural materials sourced from the region. Copaiba balsam features prominently in the blend, a resin with a distinctive green, balsamic quality that gives the fragrance its character. The structure allows for daily wear, with a balance between warmth and restraint that makes it approachable throughout the day. The result is an oud composition that feels both grounded and contemporary, with enough sophistication to stand apart from conventional approaches.
The praline note is the quiet disruptor here. It sits in the heart, flanked by geranium, and holds its ground even as the woody base builds beneath it. That decision, letting the praline breathe mid-wear rather than dissolve into the drydown, is what makes the evolution readable on skin. The Madagascan cinnamon carries heat without the sharp medicinal edge that Sri Lankan or Chinese cinnamon brings. Copaiba balsam brings a green-resinous quality to the composition, a characteristic that adds dimension and prevents the base from becoming flat.
The evolution
The bergamot and cardamom open clean. Saffron threads between them, metallic and warm, giving the first twenty minutes a brightness that feels almost citrus-forward. Then the praline emerges from the heart stage, carrying the geranium with it, floral without being powdery, sweet without being syrupy. The Madagascan cinnamon shows its cards slowly, arriving just as the top notes begin to recede, adding a warming spice that bridges the transition to the base. Copaiba balsam and cedarwood arrive together, woody and slightly green, and beneath them the oud finally speaks, deep and resinous. The praline never fully disappears. It haunts the final hours, a ghost of sweetness over warm wood, lingering on skin long after the other notes have settled into their final arrangement.
Cultural impact
Natura's Essencial line incorporates Brazilian-sourced materials, including copaiba balsam, to build a distinctive voice around the woody-oud category. The fragrances in this line explore the relationship between natural ingredients and contemporary perfumery, offering compositions with depth and complexity. Essencial Oud Masculino represents a sophisticated entry in the line, appealing to wearers drawn to woodsy depth and resinous warmth in a refined package.
