The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Verônica Kato built Essencial Elixir Masculino in 2017 with one goal: make it feel powerful. Not precious, not novel, powerful. It smells like the forest. It smells like craft. The perfumer layered cardamom and black pepper into the opening to create an effect that citrus alone cannot achieve. That's the tension at the heart of this fragrance: bright enough for a first impression, structured enough to hold your interest three hours later when the leather finally speaks. As the heart develops, the leather becomes more pronounced, revealing a warmth that feels textured and alive rather than flat. The combination of florals underneath, lavender and geranium, keeps the leather from becoming too heavy, balancing it with a softness that prevents it from overwhelming.
The note structure here is unusually stacked. Nine top notes would make most perfumers nervous, the instinct is to edit, to simplify, to trust that restraint reads as sophistication. But the approach was different. An opening that functions like a conversation: multiple voices at once, all carrying something essential. Cardamom anchors the citrus. Pink pepper adds warmth. Juniper and sage provide an herbal counterpoint that stops the whole thing from tipping into sweetness. The result is an arrival that feels immediate and confident, not trying to seduce you, just presenting itself.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes belong to cardamom and citrus, a brightness that hits fast and stays clean. Grapefruit and mandarin orange lead the charge, with lemon cutting through just enough to keep everything sharp. Black pepper and sage arrive quietly, adding weight without slowing the momentum. The leather arrives as the citrus begins to retreat, not all at once, but gradually taking over as the primary character. Lavender and geranium provide a soft floral cushion around the leather so it doesn't overwhelm, but make no mistake, this is where the fragrance becomes itself. Violet lingers in the background, almost invisible, adding a powdery dryness that keeps the leather from becoming animalic. By the time the base fully establishes, warmth comes from cognac and benzoin. Sweetness builds through vanilla and sandalwood. Structure comes from cedar and patchouli.
Cultural impact
Essencial Elixir represents a masculine fragrance launched in 2017 by perfumer Verônica Kato at Natura. With nine top notes and nine base notes creating a layered composition that rewards wearing over time, the fragrance offers a complex structure that unfolds differently as the hours pass. Built around vanilla's natural warmth, the launch draws on Brazilian biodiversity and traditional perfumery knowledge. The composition moves from bright citrus and spices through a leather heart into a warm, resinous base.
