The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Verônica Kato designed Essencial Mirra around a single material: myrrh, the resinous gum that lends the fragrance its name. The brief was to take something ancient and make it wearable, present, real. Working with Natura's botanical heritage, Kato translated the ritualistic power of myrrh into a modern composition by building around it with ingredients that share its warmth and complexity. Elemi and bergamot in the opening give the fragrance an accessible entry point, while the inclusion of davana, carrot seed, and wheat in the heart reflects Natura's commitment to working with materials that have both heritage and tactile character. The drydown layers multiple balsams and resins, allowing myrrh to breathe while surrounded by supporting warmth from vanilla and tonka bean. The result is a fragrance that honors its focal ingredient without becoming a showcase piece.
The note philosophy behind Essencial Mirra centers on contrast: bright, aromatic opening notes against a deep, resinous base. Elemi and black pepper were chosen not just for their individual character but for how they interact with myrrh in the drydown, creating a thread of warmth that runs from top to bottom. The inclusion of wheat and carrot seed in the heart reflects a preference for textured, organic notes over purely floral ones. These materials add dimension without demanding attention.
The evolution
The opening of Essencial Mirra is bright, aromatic, and tinged with spice. Elemi and bergamot establish a citrusy green quality while black pepper and cardamom add warmth that prevents the top from feeling purely fresh. This spicy-citrusesque debut lasts roughly twenty minutes before the heart takes over. Wheat and carrot seed then introduce a drier, more textured character, bringing grain and earth to the foreground. Davana contributes a faintly sweet, herbaceous note while plum adds a subtle fruity softness, keeping the heart grounded yet not austere. The transition into the drydown is gradual. Myrrh establishes itself as the base note, joined by tobacco and labdanum for smoky, leathery depth. Amber and vanilla provide warmth, while tolu balsam, peru balsam, cashmeran, patchouli, and tonka bean build a rich, resinous foundation that remains present for hours after application.
Cultural impact
Myrrh carries weight beyond perfumery, something that goes beyond its role as a fragrance ingredient. Essencial Mirra brings that context into a wearable format, offering something that feels rooted rather than borrowed. It's a fragrance for those who want their scent to feel like it means something, who prefer authenticity over generic formulas. The myrrh presence gives it a specific character, something that stands apart from standard oriental conventions. This is a scent for those who notice, who appreciate the difference between something mass-produced and something with genuine intention behind it.
