The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The 2021 release of Essencial Oud Pimenta brought together three perfumers, Verônica Kato, John Gamba, and Rodrigo Flores-Roux, each bringing something distinct to the composition. The name says it all: oud and pimenta, warmth and bite, structured around a tension that runs through every phase of the fragrance. What makes this one stand out in Natura's catalog is the use of Brazilian botanicals like ishpingo and ocotea quixos, ingredients that ground the composition in something regional without making it feel narrow. The idea was to create a fragrance that worked the way oud works in perfumery, deep, persistent, warm, but give it a Brazilian character through the botanicals and the fruity-rose heart. It's a bridge between the brand's Amazonian sourcing philosophy and the global appeal of woody-spicy compositions. The perfumers weren't trying to make something safe. They were trying to make something that felt rooted.
The Brazilian botanicals are the differentiator here. Ishpingo, ocotea quixos, and priprioca, these aren't standard perfumery materials. They add an aromatic complexity that prevents the opening from being just another pepper-citrus launch. Then there's the pepper-saffron pairing, which creates an immediate heat that holds attention without becoming aggressive. The oud and leather base is where it gets interesting: the combination of Breu-Branco, gurjan balsam, and cypriol oil with the more familiar oud and leather creates a drydown that feels distinctive rather than derivative. The fruity-rose heart, raspberry, blueberry, rose, geranium, adds a softness that balances the spice without making it safe.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately, black pepper and saffron arrive sharp and bright, softened only slightly by bergamot. Ishpingo and ocotea quixos enter within minutes, adding an earthy, almost root-like quality that grounds the initial brightness. By 15 minutes, the bergamot and lemon have faded and ishpingo anchors the composition. The heart emerges around the 30-minute mark. Rose and geranium arrive with raspberry and blueberry, sweetness that counters the lingering spice without canceling it. The blueberry adds a translucent, juicy quality that keeps the heart from becoming heavy. Leather surfaces here, weaving through the florals with a dry, unexpected edge. The base builds through hour three. Oud and leather establish a warm, woody foundation that holds everything. Patchouli, sandalwood, and amber add richness, while Peru and Gurjan balsam bring a warm, resinous quality. Vetiver and cypriol oil provide an earthy, smoky finish that lingers for hours.
Cultural impact
As part of Natura's Essencial line, this fragrance reflects the brand's ongoing exploration of Brazilian botanicals within a woody-spicy framework. The 2021 launch arrived during a broader shift in perfumery toward regional ingredients and transparent sourcing. The combination of oud with Amazonian materials like ishpingo and priprioca positions the fragrance as a bridge between Brazilian biodiversity and global fragrance trends, something that resonates with consumers seeking authenticity in what they wear.
