The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Frankincense and Myrrh Cologne arrived from perfumer Shirley Brody, working within Czech & Speake's established approach to restrained British perfumery. The name says exactly what it means, frankincense and myrrh, two of the oldest aromatic resins in use, given a cologne structure that keeps them close to the skin rather than throwing them across a room. The composition threads its resinous heart through an aromatic opening of clary sage and citrus, then lets it settle into something warm and lasting, the kind of fragrance you reach for because it never disappoints and never shouts. There is something meditative about the way the resins unfold, creating a quiet presence that stays with you throughout the day.
The frankincense and myrrh pairing is the engine here, two resins with millennia of sacred use behind them, given a British cologne treatment. The combination creates something that feels both ancient and thoroughly modern in its restraint. Where oriental fragrances often lean into their rich heritage with bold declarations, this cologne takes a quieter approach, letting the resinous character speak for itself rather than amplifying it for effect.
The evolution
The opening is bright and green-bitter. Clary sage hits first with that characteristic sharp-herbal punch, immediately followed by bitter orange and Amalfi lemon cutting through. The citrus doesn't stay sweet, it's the bitter kind, the kind that wakes you up. Basil hangs around just long enough to add an herbal edge that keeps everything from feeling like a standard citrus cologne. As time passes, the citrus recedes and the resinous heart begins to emerge. Chamomile adds a quiet herbal quality to the middle stages, and the paprika brings a spice that adds unexpected depth rather than heat. The frankincense builds gradually, smoke and warmth mingling together, anchored by cedarwood and sandalwood in the base. The lavender keeps everything balanced, preventing the composition from becoming too heavy.
Cultural impact
The cologne concentration is a practical choice, lighter than the parfum and versatile enough for daily wear. Czech & Speake threaded warmth and resins through something more aromatic and restrained. It's the kind of fragrance that rewards the wearer rather than the bystander, close and distinctive. The balance of ingredients creates a scent that invites those nearby to come closer rather than announcing itself loudly. The interplay of resinous warmth and aromatic restraint produces something that feels both familiar and entirely its own.
