The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 1980, Czech & Speake launched No.88, a fragrance named after the Jermyn Street address that started it all. John Stephen created it as an extension of the bathroom fittings studio, something clients could take with them. Bergamot, geranium, rose, and a vetiver base that hasn't moved in decades. It was never meant to be a statement. It was meant to be yours.
What makes No.88 work is the tension between its elements. Bergamot opens crisp and clean, almost medicinal, a precise citrus that refuses to be cheerful. Then geranium arrives, herbal and warm, pulling the composition away from sterility. The heart notes, rose otto, frangipani, sweet acacia, create something exotic without becoming tropical. It's the combination that surprises: rose and geranium shouldn't feel this natural together, but here they do. Sandalwood bridges the florals to the base, preventing a jarring transition. The vetiver doesn't dominate, it grounds. Everything sits on that woody, earthy foundation like it was always meant to be there.
The evolution
The opening announces bergamot with precision, crisp, clean, almost astringent. Not the cheerful citrus of summer fragrances. Something more composed. Within minutes, geranium arrives, adding an herbal green warmth that keeps the top notes from feeling clinical. The heart develops slowly: rose otto and frangipani bloom into the composition, sweet acacia threading a honeyed quality beneath the florals. Sandalwood begins its integration early, adding creaminess before the base fully arrives. Around the fourth hour, vetiver takes over, dry, earthy, slightly smoky. Sandalwood persists underneath, smooth and woody. The florals don't disappear. They retreat to a whisper, embedded in the woody base like a memory. Eight to ten hours later, on most skin, vetiver and sandalwood are still present. Not projecting. Not loud. Just there. The kind of longevity that rewards close attention rather than filling a room.
Cultural impact
No.88 occupies a specific space in fragrance culture: the classic that refuses to trend. Where houses chase seasonal launches and niche novelty, Czech & Speake has kept No.88 substantially unchanged since 1980. The fragrance attracts those who value composition over novelty, wearers who appreciate restraint as a form of confidence. Moderate sillage keeps it intimate; eight to ten hours of longevity keeps it present. This is a fragrance for someone who doesn't need to announce themselves.
