The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Aurélien Guichard composed Ricci Ricci for Nina Ricci in 2009 as a fragrance for glamorous urban heroines, working within the house's long tradition of romantic florals. The composition was designed to announce itself rather than whisper, starting with the tart brightness of rhubarb to subvert expectations of what a classic fashion-house floral should smell like. Bergamot sharpened the opening further, giving it a crisp edge that felt contemporary yet refined. The result was a fragrance that carried Nina Ricci's elegance into something more confident and direct.
The note structure reflects a philosophy of contrast: the tart, fresh opening stands in deliberate tension with the lush, creamy floral heart, and both are stabilized by the warm, woody base. This layering makes the fragrance feel dynamic rather than static. Rhubarb and bergamot were chosen to give the opening a distinctive tartness that sets it apart from typical citrus openings, while rose and tuberose anchor the heart in recognizably Nina Ricci territory, and patchouli with sandalwood provide the depth and longevity that the glamorous urban heroine requires.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with rhubarb and bergamot working in concert, the rhubarb delivering vegetal tartness while the bergamot adds citrus brightness, creating a start that feels both fresh and assertive. The heart opens gradually, with rose taking the lead before tuberose blooms fully into the composition, joined by angel's trumpet's exotic sweetness. The drydown brings patchouli's earthy depth alongside sandalwood's creamy warmth, creating a base that feels grounded and lasting rather than fleeting, completing a full arc from tart to opulent to warm.
Cultural impact
Ricci Ricci occupies a specific position: a white floral with real concentration and presence. The concentrated rose, the rich tuberose, the green tartness at the opening, it makes its presence known. Released in 2009, it offered something different in the white floral category. The advertising campaign showed exactly that energy, positioning the fragrance as a distinctive choice. For those drawn to bold florals with presence, it's remained a distinctive choice in the fragrance landscape.
