The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Premier Jour arrived in 2001 from perfumers Sophie Labbé and Carlos Benaïm at the Nina Ricci house. The name means first day, and that intention runs through the entire composition. This was positioned not as a departure but as a homecoming, a return to the original codes of a house built by Maria Nina Ricci and her son. The perfume reflects a moment when the brand sought to distill the feeling of beginning, of fresh possibility, into a wearable form.
The choice of sweet pea and mandarin orange for the opening reflects a desire to communicate freshness without resorting to typical citrus archetypes. Sweet pea is a less common material, chosen for its gentle green quality that signals a garden setting rather than a citrus grove. Gardenia and orchid in the heart represent the romantic, feminine heritage of the house. The base with sandalwood and vanilla anchors the composition in warmth, ensuring the fragrance reads as intimate and inviting rather than bright and fleeting. The overall philosophy is one of softness with purpose.
The evolution
The opening with sweet pea and mandarin orange establishes a tone of lightness and optimism. Sweet pea brings a subtle green undertone that prevents the citrus from feeling too sharp, while mandarin orange offers a clean, sunny brightness. As the fragrance moves into the heart, gardenia takes center stage with its creamy, almost buttery floral presence, softened by orchid which adds an elegant, slightly mysterious character. The drydown shifts the narrative toward warmth through musk, sandalwood, woody notes, and vanilla, creating a finish that feels like a lingering memory rather than a bold declaration.
Cultural impact
Premier Jour occupies a quiet corner of the Nina Ricci fragrance collection, offering a refined take on the house's floral heritage. Its scent opens with a bright, sparkling citrus whisper that gives way to a bouquet of white florals, think gardenia and orange blossom, lifted by a delicate, almost transparent quality. As the fragrance settles, the florals weave with a soft, creamy sandalwood undertone, while a skin‑close musk grounds the composition without overpowering. The dry‑down lingers as a subtle, warm haze that feels intimate, leaving a whisper of soft powder on the wearer.
