The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
JCC No. 2 arrived in 1987 as part of Castelbajac's broader expansion into fragrance. The brand continued building a catalog of characterful compositions, and No. 2 pushed further into complexity. This one turned toward the structural depths of chypre: aldehydes, moss, leather, and something animal at the base. It was a departure from simpler earlier approaches, moving into bold, demanding territory that rewards attention.
The aldehyde-chypre structure here is the real move. Aldehydes give that cold-sparkle opening, metallic, luminous, almost champagne-like, before the florals take over. Gardenia and carnation provide the duality: creamy warmth against spicy heat. The combination of castoreum and frankincense in the base is what separates this from lighter florals. Castoreum brings a warm, leathery animal quality that reads almost as skin. Frankincense adds smoky, resinous depth. Together with oak moss and patchouli, they create a drydown that evolves differently on everyone, personal, intimate, and surprisingly modern.
The evolution
The aldehydes hit first, that cold, sparkling brightness that announces itself before you have fully applied. Bergamot and galbanum arrive together: citrus freshness paired with green herbal snap. Fruity notes soften everything underneath, keeping the opening accessible despite its complexity. Then the florals begin their slow, deliberate takeover. Gardenia and lemon give way to carnation's warm spice, jasmine's creamy richness, and rose's honeyed depth. Each phase feels considered, building on what came before. Sandalwood smooths the transition into the base, where the composition reveals its true character. Oak moss takes command, bitter, green, deeply chypre. Patchouli brings earthy weight. Leather and castoreum create warmth that reads almost as skin. Frankincense lingers at the edges, smoky and resinous. The final hours are powdery, intimate, close.
Cultural impact
JCC No. 2 sits squarely in the chypre-floral tradition. What sets it apart is its restraint. This one stays close, intimate, complex, demanding attention from those nearby rather than everyone at a distance. The aldehyde-chypre-animalic combination has always attracted strong opinions. Wearers who connect with it tend to connect deeply.
