The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Premiere arrived in 1981, a time when the designer was exploring new creative territories beyond his established fashion work. The fragrance reflected a broader artistic vision, one that sought to translate aesthetic ideas into an intimate, personal experience. Castelbajac approached the project with a collector's eye, gathering influences and assembling them into something meant to be worn. Premiere became one of those rare objects: a piece of creative thinking made tangible, something that could rest against someone's skin and become part of their day.
The aldehydic opening brings a bright, fizzy quality, a luminous lift that feels almost effervescent. Blackcurrant and hyacinth give it a green-fruity softness that tempers the sparkle before it gets too airy. Honey in the heart adds warmth without sweetness, creating a gentle presence that balances the sharper top notes. The combination offers something layered and considered, a fragrance that unfolds across the skin with quiet intention.
The evolution
The first minutes are all aldehydes, bright, fizzing, a little abstract. Bergamot and lemon underneath keep it citrus-fresh, but the aldehydes dominate, lifting everything toward light. Hyacinth and peach arrive within minutes, green and fruity, tempering the sparkle with something softer. The heart builds gradually: lily of the valley emerging cool and dewy, then jasmine and ylang-ylang adding warmth, then rose settling in with quiet authority. Carnation and iris bring a spicy-powdery complexity. Honey ties everything together, golden and present without being sweet. Then the base arrives. Oakmoss first, that classic chypre anchor, earthy and green. Cedarwood and vetiver follow, woody and dry. Civet and ambergris add animalic depth, a whisper of something wild beneath the polish. Benzoin and styrax bring resinous warmth. Cinnamon lingers as spice. Musk softens the edges.
Cultural impact
Premiere landed in 1981 as part of a broader moment in fragrance creativity. The aldehydic chypre structure gives it a classical foundation, while the fruit-and-floral warmth throughout gives it a distinctive character. The combination of aldehydes with blackcurrant softness and honeyed heart creates something that feels both rooted in tradition and distinctly its own.
