The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Jacques Cavallier-Belletrud created Cinéma as an homage to the electric spell of Hollywood cinema, not the story on screen, but the experience of being on the other side of the lens. Working with the Yves Saint Laurent house, he channeled the glamour of premiere nights and golden-age movie palaces into a bottle. The brief was clear: translate the feeling of watching yourself through a lens, lit perfectly, into scent form.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of approachable glamour. Clementine and almond create an opening that feels celebratory without being aggressive. Jasmine and amaryllis anchor the composition in classic femininity, while the vanilla-amber-musK base ensures the fragrance wears well for hours. This is not a fragrance for one moment; it is designed to accompany an entire evening, from entrance to exit.
The evolution
The opening clementine catches light like a marquee sign, zesty and impossible to ignore. Within minutes, almond adds a softness that makes the brightness more intimate. Cyclamen appears briefly, a fleeting floral note that prevents the citrus from feeling too sharp. As time passes, jasmine enters with its characteristic opulence, quickly followed by amaryllis. Together, these white florals create a heart that feels both luxurious and slightly mysterious. The drydown takes over slowly, vanilla emerging first as a creamy foundation, then amber lending its warm, resinous character, and finally white musk threading through everything to create a clean, lasting finish.
Cultural impact
Cinéma stands out in the YSL fragrance family as a sophisticated Oriental Floral that wraps powdery florals in vanilla amber. The scent evokes the warm glow of Hollywood premiere lights with a cinematic softness. Jasmine, peony, and amaryllis form a lush floral heart, while clementine and almond blossom keep the opening airy and bright. The composition builds into a warm base of vanilla and amber with benzoin adding resinous depth. What distinguishes Cinéma is its balance of freshness and warmth, the citrussy opening gives way to lush tropical florals, but the vanilla and amber keep it grounded rather than fleeting.
