The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Luna was born in 2016 under the hand of Aliénor Massenet, who set out to capture the Moon Goddess' soothing yet seductive bath. For Penhaligon's, a house with roots in 1872 and a legacy of regal, character-driven fragrances, Massenet approached the brief with classical restraint. Rather than chasing trend, she drew from the house's British Tales heritage, selecting citrus and green notes for an opening that feels both contemporary and timeless. The white-floral heart represents the fragrance's romantic core, while the resinous-woody base grounds the celestial concept in earthly warmth.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of contrasts: bright citrus against dark blackcurrant, heady white florals against cool galbanum, warm resins against dry cedarwood. This duality mirrors lunar light itself, bright yet cool, seductive yet distant. The pairing rationale is deliberate: citrus and galbanum open with clarity and bite, the white florals provide emotional depth and sensuality, and the woody-resinous base ensures the fragrance lingers as a memory rather than a statement.
The evolution
The opening citrus-green phase sets a crisp, almost nocturnal tone, with lemon and bergamot leading before galbanum introduces its distinctive green bitterness. The mandarin orange and blackcurrant provide subtle fruity counterpoint. Within the first hour, the heart emerges gradually, gardenia and tuberose rising like night-blooming flowers unfurling in cool air. The jasmine, lily of the valley, and narcissus weave through, creating a dense but elegant floral cloud. As hours pass, the drydown takes hold, ambergris and benzoin adding salty-sweet resinous warmth while sandalwood and cedarwood provide the woody foundation. Musk keeps the composition close to skin, and vetiver adds the final earthy-smoky anchor that suggests something ancient and meditative.
Cultural impact
Since joining the British Tales collection, Luna quickly became a favourite for those seeking a unisex scent that feels both ceremonial and everyday. Wearers often cite its ability to transition from office daylight to evening gatherings, positioning it alongside Penhaligon’s classic Blenheim Bouquet as a modern, moon‑inspired staple in the house’s contemporary lineup.
