The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Kalos Impact arrived in 2015 from Ésika, a house that had built its reputation translating daily ritual into bottle. The name Kalos signals exactly what the brand wanted: a men's fragrance that announces itself without shouting. The composition was crafted by Clito Hoedicke, working through Symrise's labs, and it reads as a deliberate response to the fougère-aromatic template popular in mainstream men's fragrance at the time. Star anise, violet leaf, cardamom, and birch leaf are layered into the top and heart, while the base pulls together incense, oakmoss, cedar, and amber in a warm, resinous drydown. The bottle itself is straightforward, weighted enough to feel substantial in the hand without leaning into luxury theatrics.
What makes this composition worth a second look is how the aromatics are stacked. Star anise sits at the top, not as a background curiosity but as the structural pivot between the citrus opening and the spiced heart. That anise-birch leaf-cardamom sequence creates a bridge that most fougères skip, going from green to woody without warming up the middle. The birch leaf adds a smoky-green tension that keeps the heart from collapsing into sweetness, while the cardamom brings a warm, almost nutty quality that softens the licorice edge of the anise.
The evolution
The opening is a citrus burst that doesn't sit still. Sicilian bergamot leads, but the grapefruit and mandarin keep pulling it sideways, and somewhere in that bright confusion the star anise shows up with a licorice edge that changes the temperature. It doesn't announce itself as anise, it just makes the citrus feel colder, sharper, more like biting into something than sipping something. As the minutes pass, the violet leaf and cardamom absorb most of the brightness and the scent reads greener, spicier, less fruit and more foliage. This is where birch leaf does its quiet work, adding a smoky-green tension that keeps the heart from going soft. The incense and oakmoss arrive once the top notes have fully burned off and the composition tilts woody. The cedar and amber underneath warm everything up without making it heavy.
Cultural impact
Kalos Impact earned a following among men who wanted something distinctive without venturing into niche territory. Wearers describe it as a scent that registers without dominating, and it sits comfortably alongside more familiar mainstream releases as a daily option. The combination of citrus, aromatic spices, and a resinous woody base gives it enough character to stand out in a crowded rotation, while the moderate sillage keeps it appropriate for office and casual settings alike.
