The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Black XS L'Exces arrived in 2012. The fragrance builds on a foundation of bold, sweet masculinity with an unapologetic approach to sweetness that fills space. It's designed to make a statement rather than fade into the background. The composition centers on sweetness as its primary characteristic. Where many fragrances treat sweetness as a supporting element or subtle background warmth, Black XS L'Exces places it front and center, creating an olfactory presence that demands attention. The sweetness doesn't tiptoe or apologize, it announces itself with confidence.
Cypriol oil, also called nagarmotha, anchors the heart between the fruity opening and the amber-patchouli base. Its aromatic character brings an earthy dimension that prevents the sweetness from becoming one-dimensional. The aquatic notes in the heart are cooler, more restrained than typical ocean accords, adding contrast rather than dominating the composition. This structure creates a fragrance that maintains complexity throughout its development.
The evolution
The opening is all citrus brightness, Amalfi lemon cutting clean before the lavender arrives. Within minutes the sweetness takes over. The fruity notes arrive fast and stay. The heart shifts things toward the aquatic and earthy Cypriol, which tempers the sweetness with something cooler and more complex. By the later stages, amber and patchouli move forward. The drydown is warm, woody, slightly sweet, patchouli that reads more sweet than earthy. On most skin types, longevity reaches 8-10 hours. The sillage is moderate, present without being overwhelming, but persistent enough that traces remain into the next morning.
Cultural impact
Black XS L'Exces presents a sweet-fruity-gourmand character. It's not designed for universal appeal, some will find it delicious, others may find it too much. This fragrance leans into boldness rather than trying to please every nose. Rabanne has never been a house that chases universal appeal, and this one embodies that philosophy. It's a fragrance built for conviction rather than consensus.
