The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ésika's approach to fragrance takes a different angle than many traditional houses. Uno, launched in 2022, translates that philosophy into something with more definition: gin and mandarin open crisp and effervescent, then the warmth builds through ginger heat wrapped in clary sage and davana's honeyed, herbal twist. The ambroxan-leather base holds everything close, almost secretive. The name says it all, no elaborate backstory, just one fragrance taking up a clear space in the lineup. The opening burst of gin and mandarin creates an immediate citrus lift that feels both sharp and refreshing, setting the stage for what follows. As the top notes settle, the heart emerges with a gradual warmth that feels intentional rather than sudden.
Gin as a top note is unusual in masculine perfumery, it brings a sharp, almost bitter citrus quality that standard orange or lemon don't achieve. Davana, from the Artemisia plant, carries a honeyed, slightly anise-like character that makes the heart feel both aromatic and amber-like at once. Clary sage adds a herbal, slightly leafy quality that ties the gin and ginger together without resolving into something predictable. The ambroxan base, a synthetic ambergris substitute, provides warmth and depth without heaviness, giving the drydown that close-to-skin quality that makes people lean in.
The evolution
The opening hits first: gin and mandarin, bright and sharp, almost effervescent on skin. The citrus lift creates an immediate sense of clarity, a clean brightness that feels both sharp and refreshing. As the initial burst settles, something warmer begins to emerge, ginger and davana working together, clary sage adding an herbal counterpoint that keeps the whole heart from becoming too sweet. The transition isn't dramatic. It's gradual. The ambroxan begins to blend with the lingering davana, creating something that reads as warm without being heavy. The leather arrives last, not loud, not smoky, just a dry, slightly warm undertone that grounds everything. This base note sits close to the skin, almost secretive, offering just enough presence to leave a trace as the hours pass.
Cultural impact
The gin-davana combination is unusual enough to stand out from mainstream masculine releases, yet restrained enough for daily wear. That balance between distinctive and accessible is harder to achieve than it looks. Davana brings its honeyed, slightly anise-like character while gin offers that sharp, almost bitter citrus quality. Together they create something that feels both botanical and refined, the kind of pairing that rewards attention without demanding it. The ambroxan-leather base keeps everything grounded and close to the skin, ensuring the fragrance doesn't overpower but instead invites closer inspection.
