The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
You by Ésika comes from a house with Colombian roots, and Colombian perfumer Hernán Figoli built this composition around a simple idea: what does "you" smell like when you're not performing for anyone? The answer, apparently, is a burst of citrus that settles into skin-warm musk and amber. The fragrance opens with a generous spray of brightness, the kind that hits the air before it hits the skin, and then gradually softens into something quieter. Bergamot, grapefruit, lavender, lemon, and mandarin orange lead the charge, and the base notes of amber, musk, sandalwood, and woody notes anchor the whole thing. The name isn't a promise of transformation. It asks a question and lets the answer unfold over the course of a day.
What makes this composition worth a second look is the way the notes stack against each other. Five top notes (bergamot, grapefruit, lavender, lemon, mandarin orange) could easily overwhelm, but the heart is sparse: just cardamom and jasmine, a warm-spicy accent and a soft floral suggestion. The base takes prominence as the opening fades. Amber, musk, sandalwood, and woody notes create a drydown with real staying power, the kind of base that hums along long after the citrus has evaporated. Each note does its part, and the transitions between them feel deliberate without feeling heavy.
The evolution
The opening is a citrus riot. Bergamot leads, grapefruit follows sharp, then lemon and mandarin orange sweeten the edges. Lavender sits underneath, herbaceous and cool, weaving through the brighter notes and giving the whole opening a slightly green, aromatic backbone. As the fragrance wears, the citruses thin out and cardamom arrives with a warm, slightly peppery heat. Jasmine is there but quiet, a suggestion more than a statement, the kind of floral that whispers rather than sings. The base takes over and stays. Amber and musk settle into a close, skin-warm hum. Sandalwood and the woody notes ground everything in something dry and slightly creamy. The fragrance settles into an intimate space, a personal scent bubble rather than a room-filler. The woody-musk base lingers with a soft warmth that feels lived-in, like a familiar layer between skin and shirt.
Cultural impact
You occupies a recognizable space in the landscape of accessible, gender-neutral citrus-musk compositions. The bright top notes and the warm, skin-close base give it a versatility that works across seasons and settings, and the gender-neutral structure makes it easy to share. Within the Latin American fragrance tradition, where bold florals and heavy orientals have a strong presence, this kind of clean, citrus-led composition offers something lighter. It feels like a daytime fragrance, a weekday fragrance, a fragrance that doesn't announce itself but stays present.
