The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Maurice Roucel collaborated with Ésika on Leyenda, crafting a masculine fragrance with a clear vision. Christian Meier, the creative collaborator behind the project, described the goal directly: a fragrance that makes a man feel attractive and unforgettable. Roucel delivered a composition that opens clean and earns its warmth, note by note, hour by hour. The opening sparkles with crisp citrus, apple and bergamot creating an immediate brightness that feels both refreshing and inviting. As the top notes recede, the heart reveals itself with cardamom bringing a warm spiced quality that feels natural rather than imposed. There's a creamy softness underneath the spice that keeps everything wearable and approachable.
What sets Leyenda apart from the typical woody-spicy masculine fragrance is the middle passage. Cardamom alone can feel sharp, almost medicinal. Roucel paired it with Cashmeran, a material that adds warmth and a soft, enveloping quality to the composition. The combination reshapes how the spice is perceived, making it feel approachable rather than aggressive. Damascone contributes its own dimension, bringing a subtle fruity undertone that rounds the edges and gives the heart a more nuanced character than straight spiciness would provide. That's the move.
The evolution
The opening is immediate: apple, bergamot, grapefruit, petitgrain. A cold-fruit brightness that hits clean and announces itself without shouting. As this initial phase evolves, the citruses begin to recede and something warmer steps forward. The handoff matters. Cardamom arrives first, not as a shock but as a steady warmth that settles into the composition naturally. Lavender enters the picture, and Cashmeran makes its presence felt, adding a soft warmth that cushions the spice without overwhelming it. The middle passage is where the fragrance finds its identity. Geranium and nutmeg add nuance without complicating things. The base begins its slow arrival, amber and cedar building quietly underneath, not replacing the heart but layering beneath it. The drydown is where Leyenda earns its name.
Cultural impact
Leyenda occupies a distinctive position in masculine fragrance, crafted by a perfumer with experience in European niche and luxury circles, but positioned as an accessible daily fragrance. Ésika built its identity on making quality fragrance inclusive, and the collaboration with Roucel brought sophisticated composition into that mission. The Cardamom-Cashmeran pairing in the heart gives it a character that feels more considered than typical masculine releases. Wearers respond to exactly this balance, finding something that feels both refined and approachable.
