The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ésika's first men's fragrance arrived in 2005, a statement in a house built on accessible, everyday scent. Veronica Casanova Marano wanted to do something different with the fougère genre, not the stuffy, soapy interpretation, but something that felt like morning, like movement, like a man who doesn't need to announce himself. The name, Altheus, suggests something taller, grander, but the scent itself stays close, personal, worn rather than performed.
What makes the structure work is the tension between cool and warm. The top notes, apple, basil, tangerine, cardamom, pull in opposite directions. Sweet and green. Bright and warm. That initial push-pull keeps the opening from feeling like a generic citrus. Then the heart softens everything. Lavender leads, sure, but the melon adds unexpected sweetness and the nutmeg keeps it from becoming a soap bar. It's the kind of aromatic fougère that earns its place on skin.
The evolution
Apple and tangerine arrive sharp and immediate. Almost confrontational. The basil cools it within seconds, a green bite that resets the sweetness. Cardamom stays warm underneath, a steady warmth that prevents the opening from going aquatic or sharp. Within the first hour, the composition shifts. Lavender takes over the conversation, cool and familiar. Geranium adds a green floral complexity. Melon introduces a sweetness that feels almost out of place in a men's fragrance, but it works. Nutmeg grounds everything with dry spice. The transition from top to heart happens smoothly, without a jarring drop. The drydown arrives quietly. Amber and cashmere wood blend into something warm and soft. Patchouli keeps it grounded. Musk and tonka bean linger close to skin, sweet and powdery, for the remaining hours.
Cultural impact
Altheus belongs to the aromatic men's fragrance category, alongside classics like Cool Water and Fahrenheit. Its fruity-green opening and cashmere wood drydown set it apart from the typical lavender-vetiver combinations in the space. For a house built on accessible scent, this is the olfactory identity, familiar enough to wear, distinctive enough to remember.
