The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oligarch arrived in 2016 as Roja Dove's bold entry into luxury men's fragrance. The name itself is a provocation, oligarch, that word carrying weight and gravity, power that doesn't seek approval. In the tradition of Dove's compositions, the fragrance was conceived to assert presence with conviction. The scent speaks with authority, making its presence felt before a single word is uttered.
What makes Oligarch work is the tension between its opening and its base. The citrus-herb top is bright, almost aggressive in its clarity, lemon, bergamot, lavender, thyme arranged like a clean argument. But the base that follows is something else entirely: leather, juniper, birch, aniseed. These are materials that carry weight, that announce presence through proximity rather than projection. The blackcurrant in the heart is the secret hinge, it keeps the floral middle from going soft, holding the composition's axis even as the structure shifts.
The evolution
The opening minutes establish structure immediately. Lemon and bergamot arrive crisp, almost sharp, then the lavender and thyme cut through with an herbaceous clarity that signals intent. No softness here, this is a fragrance that wants you to know exactly what you're dealing with. As the composition progresses, the citrus gradually recedes and the heart takes its turn: blackcurrant first, then the Grasse jasmine and lily, white florals that stay close to the skin rather than announcing themselves. The coconut is present if you look for it, a subtle warmth threading through the middle notes. The drydown is where Oligarch earns its name. Juniper berry and birch arrive with a juniperous sharpness that pivots into leather, aniseed, and patchouli. The oakmoss gives it a classic chypre structure, this is not a modern linear fragrance, it moves.
Cultural impact
Oligarch occupies a specific position in the Roja Dove catalog. In the context of the house's broader output, it presents itself as a composition with presence and character. The name suggests power, and the composition delivers it through its bold aromatic and citrus-driven character. Among Roja Dove's offerings, it stands alongside Elysium Pour Homme as a notable masculine fragrance, though Oligarch takes its own distinct path with a different balance of notes.
