The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Regal Assam comes from Perito Moreno's Legacy Collection, released in 2025 as part of the Indian house's exploration of oud done with restraint. Perfumer Nitish Dixit built the composition around Assam oud, a material that has long played a role in Indian perfumery traditions. The fragrance emerged from an interest in presenting regionally significant materials in a cleaner, more wearable shape, one that respects tradition without getting trapped in it. The Legacy Collection framing shaped how Regal Assam was positioned: not as a showpiece, but as something to live in. The opening carries a bright, slightly bitter lift from bergamot, its citrus snap softened almost immediately by davana's herbal, almost fermented edge, a note that smells like dried fruit left too long in sunlight.
What's interesting here is the restraint around Assam oud itself. The oud sits at the base, cushioned by sandalwood, vetiver, and clove, while bergamot, davana, and rose keep the opening from sinking into darkness. The frankincense and labdanum in the heart add resinous warmth without pushing into church-incense territory. It's a structural decision, not just a note list, and it gives the oud room to feel present without dominating.
The evolution
The opening of Regal Assam is almost disarming in its clarity. Bergamot leads, bright and slightly bitter, with davana adding a herbal, almost fermented edge that keeps things from going too clean. Rose shows up early too, but in a dried-petal way, not a bouquet way. There's a greenness here that feels like the moment before rain, not the moment after. As the composition evolves, it pivots. Frankincense and labdanum arrive together, bringing a sticky, resinous warmth that feels liturgical at first, then warms into something closer to old leather. The cedarwood and amyris ground the middle, while kashmiri musk adds a soft, skin-like haze. Patchouli lurks underneath, dry and earthy, preventing the heart from going too polished. The oud doesn't announce itself. It gathers.
Cultural impact
Regal Assam sits at the intersection of two currents in modern niche perfumery: growing global curiosity about Indian oud as a material, and a wider appetite for oud compositions that feel wearable rather than ceremonial. Where many oud-forward fragrances lean into intensity and density, this one asks the material to behave differently. The composition's restraint around Assam oud, treating it as a center of gravity rather than a spectacle, reflects an approach that values depth without theater.
