The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
SALTANAT arrived in 2025 as part of Perito Moreno's expanding catalogue, the composition of Nitish Dixit. The fragrance enters a conversation where the house has been steadily building a body of work that treats composition with care. SALTANAT marks a clear step into heavier territory, the kind of release that prizes depth over accessibility. The citrus sparks on top are deliberate brighteners, cutting through the darkness that follows with a sharp, almost bracing energy. The dense cluster of resin, wood, and animalic in the base is where the real weight sits, a foundation that holds everything else up. Indian oud, Thai oud, and civet layered into a single base draws on a construction rooted in traditional attar thinking, brought into a 2025 format.
Two ouds in one base is the first thing worth noticing. Indian and Thai oud stacked together produce a layered resinous warmth rather than a single-note oud bomb, each bringing its own density to the mix. Civet adds the animalic edge at the very bottom, a furred note that grounds the entire composition. Guaiac wood and coffee in the heart create an unusual middle, smoky-bitter notes that push against the spices and keep them from cloying. Clove leaf instead of clove bud picks the greener, sharper side of the spice, giving the opening a fresher bite than a warmer bud would have provided.
The evolution
The first 30 minutes are brightness and bite. Bergamot, lemon, and lime hit on contact, sharp enough to cut through a cold room. Clove leaf and nutmeg arrive within minutes, the green-spicy edge immediately obvious. Then the construction pivots hard. Guaiac wood, coffee absolute, and rose build into a smoky heart that has almost nothing to do with what opened. This is the phase where you wonder whether you're wearing the same fragrance. Roughly two hours in, the ouds take over. Indian and Thai oud plus ambergris settle into something dense and resinous, the kind of base that announces itself without shouting. Civet weaves through it, adding a furred warmth that turns the scent inward and keeps it close to the skin. Sandalwood and cedar smooth the base, lending a creamy, almost milky softness to the heavier materials.
Cultural impact
SALTANAT reads as a fragrance that takes its materials seriously. The double oud construction, the real civet, the careful balance of resin, wood, and spice, all of it points to a release built for the wearer who wants to feel something substantial on skin. It's the kind of fragrance that asks for attention, that rewards patience as it develops, that doesn't apologize for its weight. Where lighter compositions aim for broad wearability, this one commits to a heavier register and trusts the wearer to come to it.
