The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Walk On Air Sunset arrived in fall 2016 as a limited edition. Kate Spade wanted to extend the original Walk On Air into evening territory, a fragrance that could carry the same polished optimism but with more presence, more warmth. The brief was simple: take the signature and deepen it. Sunset provided the metaphor. The scent captures that suspended moment, not quite day, not quite night, where everything feels both soft and certain. Evening florals against a warm amber base, done with the house's characteristic lightness of touch.
What makes this composition interesting is the push of white florals into evening wear. Magnolia dominates throughout, petals in the heart, leaf in the opening, impression throughout, but here it has weight. The ambrette in the base is unusual: musk mallow provides a quiet animalic warmth that rounds the powdery elements without turning heavy. Ylang-ylang bridges the florals to the amber. The result is a white floral that does not shy away from the skin.
The evolution
The opening arrives quickly: bergamot bright, magnolia leaf green and immediate. Within minutes the litchi and cyclamen emerge, a subtle tropical sweetness beneath the florals. The heart takes over around the 15-minute mark and stays for hours. Night-blooming jasmine and Bulgarian rose amplify each other; the magnolia remains the anchor. The drydown arrives quietly around the 3-hour mark. Heliotrope and iris bring powder without softness, this is powder with structure. Sandalwood and amber hold the base, ambrette adding a whisper of something warm and close. The sillage drops to intimate, the kind of scent you catch yourself rather than a room catching it first.
Cultural impact
Walk On Air Sunset found its audience among fans of the original who wanted more. The warmer, more pronounced character distinguished it from the Day version. It was available as a 100 ml Eau de Parfum and has since been discontinued, a limited moment for a brand that rarely revisits its past.
