The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Live Colorfully Sunshine arrived in 2016 as a flanker to Kate Spade's original Live Colorfully from 2013. Sunshine narrowed that original vision to a single mood, concentrating the formula into a tighter, more focused composition. The fragrance was designed for warm weather and casual moments, built around a lighter, more refreshing character than the original. The opening hits immediately with a burst of citrus and green: mandarin orange, violet leaf, bergamot, and neroli stack on top of one another in quick succession, each note clearly defined. Mandarin offers the sweetness, violet leaf adds a crisp green snap, bergamot contributes its familiar bright sparkle, and neroli brings an almost bitter edge that lifts everything off the skin.
What makes Sunshine worth attention is the structure beneath the breezy surface. The top notes, mandarin, violet leaf, bergamot, neroli, are each bright but each pulls in a slightly different direction. Mandarin provides a familiar sweetness, violet leaf contributes a green snap that keeps things from feeling like a generic citrus, and neroli brings something almost bitter at the edges. The middle layers orange blossom and peony, both of which read clean and creamy.
The evolution
The first 20 minutes are the loudest part. Mandarin and neroli arrive at full volume, sharp and sparkling, almost fizzy. The violet leaf underneath gives it a green edge that keeps the citrus from reading like a soft drink. Within 40 minutes the florals take over. Orange blossom dominates here, soft and creamy, with peony adding a cool, watery quality. Magnolia drifts in and out around the edges of the composition, present but never the lead voice. The scent becomes quieter, closer, more personal as the florals settle into their role. By the two-hour mark the honey and Tahitian vanilla emerge. They are not loud. The honey adds a golden sweetness, and the vanilla rounds the edges of the composition, smoothing the transition between the brighter florals and the softer base below. White musk underneath keeps everything clean and close to skin.
Cultural impact
Live Colorfully Sunshine sits comfortably in the space between designer fragrance and true summer scent. The 2016 release exists in a category built around bright citrus openings and soft floral middles, a familiar commercial structure for warm-weather scents aimed at a broad audience. Sunshine wears its commercial skin openly, leaning into easy accessibility rather than niche complexity. The composition is approachable, the bottle is recognizable, and the scent itself doesn't demand much from the wearer beyond a spritz and a sunny day. It is apparently discontinued, which has shaped how some wearers approach it now.
