The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Kate Spade New York began as a handbag label in 1993 and built into a global lifestyle brand. Their fragrance line echoes the house love of bright color and the iconic spade motif, designed around the principle that joy colors life. Marie Salamagne designed Kate Spade New York in 2020 to bring the brand identity into the olfactory space. The brief was straightforward: a fruity-floral that feels like what the brand looks like, bright, optimistic, unapologetically pretty. Nothing heavy, nothing dark. Just joy in a bottle.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of accessible luxury and joyful simplicity. Wild strawberry, citruses, and bergamot open the composition with immediate brightness, chosen to evoke the feeling of spring rather than the depth of autumn. Rose and freesia form the romantic heart, adding sophistication without heaviness. The base of ambroxan and cashmeran grounds the fragrance with warmth and a soft musky quality, ensuring longevity while maintaining the overall lightness. This is a composition designed for layering into daily life, present but never dominating, crafted to make the wearer feel polished and optimistic without demanding attention.
The evolution
Wild strawberry leads the charge at application, bright and immediate, accompanied by a burst of citruses and the sophisticated green spark of bergamot. The effect is sunny, like a Saturday morning in the city. Within minutes, the heart begins to unfold as rose appears, soft and romantic, while freesia adds a dewy, slightly cool floral character that prevents the composition from tipping into saccharine territory. The transition is graceful, the florals complementing rather than competing with the fruit. By the time the drydown arrives, ambroxan and cashmeran have taken hold, wrapping the earlier notes in a subtle warmth that extends the wear without ever feeling heavy or dark. The entire arc feels purposeful, each phase building naturally into the next.
Cultural impact
Kate Spade New York's 2020 fragrance launch arrived during a cultural moment when consumers sought optimism and accessibility in their fragrance choices. The brand leveraged its established reputation in fashion to create a scent that prioritized joy and approachability over complexity or exclusivity. In the context of the broader fragrance industry, Kate Spade New York represents the continued democratization of designer fragrance, offering quality materials and thoughtful composition at a moderate price point that makes it accessible to a wider audience.
