The beginning
Kate Spade launched Live Colorfully in 2013, marking the house's 20th anniversary. The name itself captures the spirit of what was intended: a fragrance that opens bright and ends warm, never straying into heaviness or drama. Daphné Bugey at DSM-Firmenich translated the concept into a composition where mandarin, water lily, and star anise open the experience. At the heart, tiare, gardenia, and coconut water bring a lush floral depth. Sheer amber, musk, and Tahitian vanilla anchor everything in warmth. The notes tell the story without needing explanation.
The interesting tension in Live Colorfully comes from pairing star anise, a spice usually found in richer, deeper compositions, with water lily and tiare, two florals that lean aquatic and creamy rather than sweet. Daphné Bugey threaded that needle by letting coconut water act as the bridge: cool enough to keep the florals grounded, but with enough body to prevent the whole thing from feeling like a cooling mist. Gardenia dominates the heart, as gardenia tends to do, but here it's playing in a sandbox with tropical notes rather than the traditional green-and-soap interpretations.
