The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Body Shop's 2016 Voyage Collection took its name literally, each fragrance a ticket to somewhere sun-drenched and specific. Polynesian Island Tiare was crafted by perfumer Elise Bénat as a direct sensory translation of the Polynesian islands: the white tiare flower worn behind the ear, the frangipani scattered on temple offerings, the humid green of a place where everything blooms year-round. The brief was simple and unusual: make it smell like the hour after a swim, not the swim itself.
What makes this structure interesting is the handoff. The citrus top doesn't linger, it arrives, brightens, and yields within minutes to the tropical heart. That quick transition means the composition never smells like orange-scented air freshener. Instead, it moves from brightness into lushness, and the coconut-vanilla base acts less like a fragrance note and more like warm skin memory, the impression of heat, not the smell of a product. The tiare flower itself contains benzyl acetate, the same aromatic molecule found in jasmine, which gives it that creamy, slightly indolic floral depth without requiring a heavy-handed extraction.
The evolution
The opening is citrus with intent, bergamot and orange arrive bright, almost tart. Not the rounded citrus of a luxury cologne, but something closer to fruit about to fall. Within minutes the tiare and frangipani arrive, and the bergamot softens into the background like a coastline retreating. The ylang-ylang thickens the air. This is the fragrance's honest heart, lush, warm, tropical without apology. By the third hour the coconut cream and vanilla have taken over. The drydown is the tell: sweet but not sugary, creamy but not heavy. It stays close to the skin, intimate and warm, the kind of smell another person notices only when they're already next to you. Lasts 4-6 hours on most skin types, settling into a quiet close by evening.
Cultural impact
Polynesian Island Tiare occupies a recognizable corner of the fragrance world alongside Beach Walk by Maison Margiela Replica, La Femme by Prada, and Sun di Gioia by Giorgio Armani, fragrances that share tropical florals and coconut as a signature cluster. Summer is where this fragrance lives. The light, summery character makes it ideal for casual wear, beach days, and warm-weather occasions.
