The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Black Musk arrived in 2015 as The Body Shop extended its Musk collection beyond the original White Musk from 1981 and the 2014 Red Musk. Cécile Matton and Ralf Schwieger built this edition around a single premise: what happens when the sweetest opening possible meets the deepest musk in the range. The result is a fragrance that starts in daylight and ends somewhere else entirely. The contrast between light, fruity notes and the black musk base defines every phase of the wear.
The note pyramid reveals the intent. Pear and bergamot arrive first, bright, accessible, almost playful. The pink pepper keeps them honest, adding a faint warmth that prevents the opening from reading as naive. In the heart, heliotrope brings its characteristic almond-marzipan softness while licorice introduces an anise edge that some find captivating and others find polarizing. Ylang-ylang threads through as a tropical floral anchor.
The evolution
The first twenty minutes belong to the pear. Bright, clean, with a slight lift that makes it feel freshly applied. The bergamot adds a citrus brightness while pink pepper registers as a gentle warmth at the edges of the sweetness. Then the transition begins. Around the thirty-minute mark, the heliotrope emerges, powdery, almond-scented, immediately softening the fruit's sharpness. The licorice arrives quietly, threading its anise character through the heart in a way that divides opinion sharply. On some skin, this is fascinating. On others, it reads as too much. The ylang-ylang surfaces last among the heart notes, bringing a tropical creaminess that bridges toward the base. By hour two, the black musk takes over. The vanilla husk adds warmth while patchouli grounds everything in an earthy, slightly bitter finish.
Cultural impact
Black Musk occupies a specific space in the Body Shop lineup: the darker alternative to the original White Musk. The fragrance differentiated itself through the black musk and vanilla husk combination, creating warmth that felt adult without becoming heavy. Wearers gravitate toward it when they want something bold yet wearable, a scent with enough depth for evening occasions but practical enough for daily use. The black vanilla and patchouli base give it a presence that lingers without overwhelming.
