Why it exists.
The beginning
Vincent Schaller built White Musk Libertine as an EDP extension of The Body Shop's White Musk line, which the brand had been refining since 1981. By 2011, three decades of musk expertise gave Schaller the room to push further, into lokum, the Turkish delight that gives this its name. Rose, almond, and honey woven through a whipped cream and orchid heart. It's the signature musk turned slightly indulgent, sweet enough to name but grounded enough to wear daily.
The lokum note is the tell. Turkish delight, white honey, and almond press into the heart of the composition, giving it a sweet-almond character that lingers beautifully. Combined with whipped cream, it becomes edible without becoming food. The orchid keeps it floral, the musk keeps it grounded. It's a balance that sounds simple but reads as distinctive: sweet, powdery, and undeniably feminine in a way that doesn't apologize for any of it. The white honey amplifies the sweetness while the almond provides a nutty depth that rounds out the scent profile.
The evolution
The opening is whipped cream and musk, light, slightly sweet, quietly lifted. No urgency. Then the lokum arrives, bringing Turkish delight forward, softened by white honey and almond, and suddenly it becomes powdery in the way good vintage scarves used to be. Orchid adds feminine warmth that keeps it from tipping into pure sweetness. By the drydown, the musk comes forward and the florals settle. Musk closest to the skin, vanilla taking over the drydown, orchid and powdery notes carrying through to the end. Close enough that someone standing near you will notice. On some skin, the lokum resurfaces hours later, a late whisper of rose and almond. The scent evolves with remarkable grace, each stage revealing new dimensions while maintaining that initial sense of comfort and softness.
Cultural impact
White Musk Libertine offered something different in musk perfumery. Rather than following darker, more aggressive traditions, The Body Shop leaned into accessibility, comfort, and a kind of ethical luxury that didn't require explanation. It was offering something honest: a sweet, powdery, long-lasting musk that fit the brand's broader identity without ever needing to shout about it. The fragrance captured a moment where approachable elegance mattered more than complexity for its own sake. It spoke to those who wanted sophistication without pretense, comfort without compromise.
