The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Christine Nagel created Si in 2013, the Italian word for 'yes', spoken with the certainty of someone who never needs to explain themselves. Nagel's challenge was to build a fragrance that felt effortless in the Armani tradition, that arrived fully formed without apology. The name is the concept: an affirmation, not a question. For a brand founded on refined simplicity and perfect balance, Si needed to capture that same assured elegance in olfactory form. Nagel chose notes that would speak to confident modern femininity without shouting. Blackcurrant brought a sharp, contemporary brightness. Bourbon Vanilla added warmth and approachability. Suede gave texture and intimacy. Each element was chosen not for novelty but for how it would contribute to a cohesive whole.
The note philosophy behind Si centers on contrasts held in balance. Blackcurrant's tartness meets vanilla's warmth, not to fight but to enhance each other. The opening is designed to be remembered, the drydown to be desired. Saffron was chosen specifically for its warmth-giving properties, a spice that can lift fruitiness into something with depth and permanence. Rose bridges the opening and drydown phases, its classic elegance providing continuity as fruits fade and woods emerge. Suede appears only in the drydown because its intimate character is most effective when the composition has settled, when the brightest notes have already done their work.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with a vivid burst of blackcurrant and pear, two fruits that together create an immediate impression of brightness and vitality. Saffron appears immediately, threading warmth into the opening before that brightness can feel superficial. The combination is stimulating rather than sweet, pulling attention without asking for it. Within minutes, the heart begins to emerge. Bourbon Vanilla surfaces first, its rich, creamy warmth softening the sharp fruitiness into something more intimate. Rose follows, adding a classic floral elegance that elevates the heart without compromising its warmth. The Fruits note in the heart blurred together, their individual identities less important than the overall effect of sweet, soft lushness they create. By the middle hours, the composition has shifted entirely. The drydown takes over with Bourbon Vanilla now grounded by patchouli. The earthy depth of patchouli brings weight and longevity without darkness. Suede adds a final textural element, making the fragrance feel close and personal.
Cultural impact
Sì won the Fragrance Foundation's Fragrance of the Year, Women's Prestige award in 2015. The fragrance offers a sweet-fruity chypre composition built around blackcurrant as a defining note. Jasmine absolute and may rose absolute create a floral heart, while vanilla absolute and patchouli anchor the drydown. The campaign featured Cate Blanchett, photographed by Tom Munro, whose public presence embodies the qualities of the fragrance. The composition became notable for its confident use of fruity and floral elements within a structured chypre framework, representing a distinct approach in contemporary women's fragrance.
