The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Anne Flipo and Carlos Benaïm created Libre in 2019. The fragrance applies the house's philosophy to a bold floral structure that deliberately echoes fougère heritage while refusing to sound dated. The composition opens with crisp citrus brightness that gives way to an unexpected lavender heart, cool, aromatic, and herbaceous, before the orange blossom absolute arrives to add warmth and a subtle bitter edge. The jasmine sambac absolute brings exotic depth beneath the florals, creating a sense of richness that never overwhelms. The base lingers close to the skin, animalic and warm through ambergris and salt, settling into a vanilla-musk embrace that feels intimate rather than projecting.
What makes Libre unusual is the dual lavender presence. French lavender opens the fragrance and reappears in the heart, a sustained aromatic thread most compositions abandon after the top notes fade. The lavender maintains a cool botanical quality throughout the wear. Orange blossom absolute from Morocco brings the warmth, headiness, and a faint bitter edge that keeps it from reading simply sweet. Jasmine sambac absolute adds an exotic depth beneath the florals. The base leans animalic through ambergris, salt, skin, warmth, rather than the predictable amber-wood drydown.
The evolution
Libre opens bright and clean, mandarin, blackcurrant, petitgrain doing quick work before the lavender settles in. Twenty minutes in, the orange blossom absolute takes over. This is the turn. The cool botanical quality doesn't disappear but warms underneath as the florals expand. The jasmine sambac surfaces briefly, bringing a darker, more exotic edge before the vanilla-musk base arrives. The base is where Libre earns its reputation. Vanilla anchors it sweet and warm. Musk and cedar keep it close to skin. The ambergris surfaces in the final hour, salt and warmth that smell like skin, not like perfume. On fabric, it fades to a quiet vanilla-lavender whisper that lingers into the next day.
Cultural impact
Libre won Fragrance of the Year, Women's Luxury at the Fragrance Foundation Awards in 2020. It found an audience of women who wanted presence without sweetness, floral intensity without delicacy. The fragrance offers a bold alternative to sweeter feminine scents, resonating with those who appreciate a more assertive olfactory statement.
