Houbigant conceived Bois Mystique in 2018 with perfumer Luca Maffei, translating the house's four-century legacy into a woody-spice narrative. Maffei drew on the brand's historic ties to explorers who once charted uncharted forests for exotic ingredients. The choice of cardamom and ginger in the opening reflects a deliberate intent to capture aromatic energy immediately, signaling that this is not a fragrance for those who prefer gentle introductions.
The note choices reflect a philosophy of contrast and balance. The opening's vibrant spices give way to incense and cypriol, which bring smoky, almost medicinal depth. Iris in the heart provides an unexpected softness that elevates the composition beyond simple woody-spice territory.
