The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Céline Ellena had a window of time in the countryside near Grasse. No agenda, just the slow passage of days and the arrival of warm weather. When the heat came, the fig trees released their perfume, bitter and sensual, harsh and voluptuous all at once. Sitting beneath the black fig tree, its gnarled branches reaching out like arms, cooled by wind that crumpled the large leaves above, the contradiction struck her as worth a fragrance. Not just any fragrance. One dedicated to the hearts of men. Reassuring and elegant, yet contradictory, that was the brief. The tree became the composition: green sap at the opening, the warmth of spices in the heart, and at the base, the wood and candied fruit that made the whole thing hold together. Ellena translated a specific place and moment into something a wearer could carry.
The fig note appears three times in the pyramid, each deployment different. Fig leaf opens bright and vegetal. Black fig in the heart brings sweetness and body. Candied fig in the base rounds the drydown into something warm and lingering. This structure prevents fig from becoming a single trick. The heart adds iris and jasmine, bringing a powdery elegance that keeps the sweetness from overwhelming. Cardamom and black pepper in the top layer do the aromatic work that signals masculinity without aggression, spices that reassure rather than announce. Cedarwood and patchouli in the base ensure the drydown stays grounded.
The evolution
The opening arrives green and immediate, fig leaf with the sharp clarity of sap. Cardamom adds warmth right away, and black pepper follows within minutes, creating an aromatic layer that reads as clean but not sterile. The heart emerges with black fig, sweeter and rounder than the leaf, supported by iris and jasmine in a combination that feels smooth and refined. The jasmine lifts without sweetening; the iris adds powdery elegance. The heart persists for several hours, and as it fades, candied fig begins to surface in the base, blending with cedarwood and patchouli into a warm, woody drydown. The final phase is cohesive, fruit, wood, and spice have merged into something that lingers close to the skin. The fragrance moves through its phases with a natural rhythm, each stage offering its own character before transitioning smoothly into the next.

Figuier Noir has built a loyal following among enthusiasts who appreciate its depth and complexity. Respected by fragrance enthusiasts for its consistent performance, strong longevity, balanced sillage, and a note structure that works across seasons. The perfumer's personal narrative, her time in Grasse, sitting beneath the black fig tree, has become part of the fragrance's appeal, giving wearers a story that deepens their connection to the scent. It sits comfortably between niche and accessible, carrying the Houbigant name without demanding it.
