The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Just by Franck Boclet is an extrait de parfum that arrived in 2019 as part of the Rock & Riot Ivory collection. The fragrance centers on a warm-spicy amber character, built as a concentrated formula that pulls the core notes into sharp relief. It stands apart from earlier releases in the same line, offering something with a more assertive presence while maintaining the collection's distinctive naming convention. The composition draws the wearer into its core without preamble, letting the concentrated nature of the extrait speak for itself. Amber provides the backbone, with spice notes threading through the formula to keep the warmth from becoming static. This is a fragrance that rewards attention to how its elements interact at different points during wear.
What makes Just structurally unusual is the ratio of heart to base notes, six heart notes against five base notes, with only three at the top. Most extraits front-load the drydown and let the opening breathe. This one inverts that approach. The florals and spices do the heavy lifting, supported by a base that arrives late and stays longer than expected. Cloves and labdanum bridge the gap between the bright opening and the animalic foundation, anchoring the transition as the fragrance moves through its phases.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with intention. Bergamot and basil arrive together, the citrus cutting through the herbaceous edge within seconds. Around the point when the initial brightness begins to settle, the cloves emerge, warm and slightly medicinal, grounding what was bright. The handoff to florals follows as the composition moves forward. Rose and jasmine layer rather than compete, and ylang-ylang adds tropical creaminess that shifts the whole composition toward warmth. Then the animalic notes build underneath the florals. Musk and castoreum emerge gradually, their presence becoming more pronounced until the fragrance reads as intimate and close, with a feral edge that adds complexity. The drydown settles into amber and patchouli, with cedar providing structure that keeps the sweetness from floating away. On fabric, it lingers into the next day.
Cultural impact
Just occupies an interesting position in the niche market, a 2019 extrait concentration in a category that often favors edp strength-to-weight ratios. The animalic character puts it in conversation with older formulations and a specific collector audience, while the yellow florals give it accessibility that pure leather-animalic compositions lack. What keeps it relevant is that it doesn't hedge: eight to ten hours of presence requires commitment, and the wearers who choose it tend to be the ones who've stopped looking for safe.
